Honda Recalls 2009-2010, 2012-2016 GL1800 Gold Wing Motorcycles That Have Air Bag Inflators Assembled As Part Of the Air Bag Module That May Explode Due To Propellant Degradation

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2009-2010 and 2012-2016 Honda GL1800 Gold Wing motorcycles.

These motorcycles have air bag inflators assembled as part of the air bag module that may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to lower absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.

An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the rider resulting in serious injury or death.

Honda Recalls 2006-2009, and 2012 Gold Wing GL1800 Motorcycles Equipped With Air Bags Since the Inflators May Rupture Due To Propellant Degradation Occurring After Long-term Exposure To Absolute Humidity and Temperature Cycling

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2006-2009 and 2012 Honda GL1800 (Goldwing) motorcycles originally sold, or ever registered, in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands, or "Zone A."

Additionally, if not included in "Zone A," Honda is recalling certain 2006-2009 Honda GL1800 (Goldwing) motorcycles originally sold, or ever registered, in Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, or "Zone B."

Additionally, if not included in Zone A or Zone B above, Honda is recalling certain 2006-2008 Honda GL1800 (Goldwing) motorcycles originally sold, or ever registered, in the states of Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the air bag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front air bags, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.

An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the operator resulting in serious injury or death.

Honda Recalls 2001-2010 and 2012-2015 GL1800, 2001-2005 GL1800A, and 2013-2015 GL1800B Motorcycles for Dragging Rear Brakes After the Brakes are Released

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. (Honda) is recalling certain model year 2001-2010 and 2012-2015 GL1800, 2001-2005 GL1800A and 2013-2015 GL1800B motorcycles.

The rear brakes of the affected motorcycles may drag after the brakes are released.

A rear brake that drags may increase the risk of a vehicle crash. Additionally, extended riding with the rear brake dragging could generate enough heat to result in a fire.

145,219 units are affected.

Riding a Honda Gold Wing at the Age of 87 - Age Need Not Be a Factor

I thought I started riding very late. I was 51 when I decided to ride for the first time. I took a Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) class to learn how to ride. I have met a few riders who are much older than me who are still riding. Leo, in the Polar Bear Grand Tour, is still riding at 97 although he switched to a trike about five years ago. Leo was riding before I was born. I eventually ended up in a Gold Wing Road Riders Association (GWRRA) Chapter F in New Jersey. The Wingers are a pretty safe bunch with a lot of safety classes and riding rules with safety in mind.

For those of you wanting to know how older riders are doing in GWRRA, a chapter member steered me to a video from CBC.ca about Frank and Mary. Frank ran a machine shop before he retired. He had always wanted to ride motorcycles but work got in the way. At the age of 67, Frank learned to ride on a used bike and then worked his way up to a Honda Gold Wing. He and Mary joined a GWRRA group in Newfoundland and now they are the most respected members in their motorcycling community. Frank is now 87 and Mary is 84. Here's a 22 minute video that appeared on TV recently that lets you get to know the couple up close. Being a GWRRA member may not appeal to all riders but Frank and Mary are thriving in this community of riders.
