Terry Hershner decided he wanted to take a motorcycle ride from Orlando, FL to Los Angeles, CA. That's a 3000 mile journey. However, he wanted to take the trip riding a Zero S electric motorcycle. These bikes don't go very far between charges and a charge can take 8 hours. Terry wanted to make the trip in 5 days. Do the math and this looks to be impossible. Terry had a plan to do it with modified charging methods. Take a look at an article with a video by gas2.org's Susanna Schick. Most of your questions will be answered.

Motorcyclists: Watch Out for Left Turners and Be Prepared

I have Google Alerts set to capture most media accounts of fatal motorcycle accidents. So, I see many "left-turner" crashes involving motorcyclists. It makes me want to scream that the majority of riders don't know about left turn accidents or choose to ignore them. I've written about these accidents for the better part of 12 years. I feature "10 Ways to Be Safe on a Motorcycle" on every page of my website. I've written about it in my new Kindle book. I just saw another tragic story about a rider who liked to live on the edge. These stories tend to lock into helmets and proper riding attire as possible ways to prevent accidents. Helmet laws are also discussed heavily. Back and forth discussions among riders and non-riders often ensue in the comments after stories. However, nothing seems to stop the continuing carnage of similar accidents that go on and on across the country. Maybe nothing can stop this senseless loss of life. But, maybe, just maybe we can collectively stop one or two of these accidents by reading the following story and telling a rider friend or two. Can't hurt. Here's an excerpt:
"It was 82 degrees with low humidity and light wind the day Scott Pohl died. This is significant because a motorcycle was not Scott’s primary transportation. He usually drove his pickup to work. Scott’s shift for most of his six-day week started at 4:30 p.m. But on Fridays and Saturdays he’d start at 7 p.m., which is also significant. It is why he was headed east on North Territorial Road in Salem Township at 6:32 p.m. on the second day of summer, approaching an SUV driver who never saw him coming." -- John Counts, AnnArbor.com

Motorcyclist Continues Riding after Losing his Left Hand

I just saw an article in Ultimate Motorcycling about a motorcyclist who lost his left hand. This new handicap did not stop the rider. We all want to ride and no matter what happens to a rider, the will to continue riding is very strong. Here's an excerpt from the article:
"Motorcycling is like sugar - with the first taste fresh in your memory you know it needs to be part of your everyday life. But what happens when something catastrophic happens in your life to prevent you from getting that sweet rush of joy and excitement from riding a motorcycle? In the case of Bert Pot, the lure of riding a motorcycle again was so strong that, despite the losing his left hand, he set about making the impossible very possible." -- Ultimate Motorcycling Staff

When Will Electric Motorcycles Make It to the Big Time?

Dexter Ford of the New York Times thinks that electric motorcycles may have a place but it may be a long time coming. Here's an excerpt from his article:
"The appeal of an electric motorcycle is obvious. It would deliver its power silently and instantly, without the need for oil, fire, smoke, noise, clutch or gearbox. Each fill-up would cost just a dollar. It might even talk to your iPhone, though it's hard to imagine what kind of a useful conversation the two might have. An electric bike might someday be the next big thing, in a 'what would Steve Jobs have ridden' sort of way." -- Dexter Ford

Motorcycle trikes are becoming quite popular. A piece on the NY Times website discusses some major reasons why riders are turning into trikers. Here's an excerpt:
"In his nearly 50 years as an avid motorcyclist, Grady Howard has roared down the tobacco roads of North Carolina and through the mountains of old Kentucky, all with his wife, Barbara, tucked behind him. But with a balky left leg and myriad other maladies, he knew the only way to stay wild was to add a wheel. 'I told my wife it was either trike it or park it,' said Mr. Howard, 74, wearing a cowboy hat and a bright yellow safety shirt. And she said, 'Trike it.'" -- Jesse McKinley

Riding and Repairs at the 2012 BuRP Rally

I recently noticed a short video posted on Facebook that was made by a participant of the 2012 BuRP Rally held in Maggie Valley, NC. (BuRP stands for Blue Ridge Parkway and u.) This rally, more than a decade old, was founded by members of my old motorcycle forum on About.com. Both my late wife, Jane, and I attended the rally twice. The video brought back pleasant memories of the rally. I especially remember the group riding through the very scenic Blue Ridge Parkway region and the ever present front porch repair sessions. Both are covered in the video. Thanks for the memories guys.

Check out the video.

Here's my BuRP Day by Day Blog of the 2006 BuRP rally.

Seat heights for other 2013 makes and models are currently being developed as the manufacturers release that information.

E15 Fuel Becomes Problem for Motorcyclists

The NY Times has an article about the new EPA requirement to begin using E15 fuel.

Although E15 is not yet mandated for motorcycles, it becomes a problem when dispensed in a hose through which both E10 and E15 run.

If E15 remains in the hose from the previous customer, it mixes with the E10 causing a higher than E10 concentration for a motorcycle. The EPA wants to require that a minimum purchase of 4 gallons be made. This immediately becomes a big problem for motorcyclists.

Do You Recognize this Motorcycle?

Someone submitted a picture of his dad riding a Harley but is not sure what year and model the bike is. He thinks it's a 1954 because that was the year printed on the bottom of the picture but I'm pretty sure it's a much earlier year.

His father, Ellis B. Emery, was shipped to Vietnam when he was drafted in the early 60s and this Harley was stolen from him while he was overseas. Emery passed away in 2005.

Take a look at the bike and description and see if you can help him learn more about this motorcycle.

Jay Leno Discusses and Rides the Mission-R Electric Superbike

Denis Flierl of TorqueNews.com has published an article that discusses the Mission-R electric superbike with Jay Leno. Jay then takes us on a ride to see how the bike compares to a regular superbike. The bike is quiet, has no transmission, uses Android 7" tablet technology for an instrument panel, and has a range between 80-100 miles, depending on how ridden. Here's an excerpt:
"It's no secret that Jay Leno loves cars and has a stable of over 100 classic and collectable cars in his garage, but he also has over 100 motorcycles in his collection. So it was only natural for Leno to invite the team from Mission Motors over to learn more about the companies Mission-R electric motorcycle and its technology." -- Denis Flierl, TorqueNews.com
I suggest you play the video in full-screen mode. Read the article and see the Video.

Motorcycles and ABS - Will ABS Be a Requirement Soon?

BMW pioneered the use of ABS on motorcycles. 24 years has gone by. How good is ABS on motorcycles now? Ron Lieback of UltimateMotorcycling.com published an article that has some answers. Here's an excerpt:
"When testing new motorcycles, judging the worthiness of a bike's Antilock Braking can become quite enjoyable. The ultimate ABS system will act almost undetectable, and the ultimate test of such a system involves the fun factor of trying to lock up the wheels at high speeds, both on dry and wet pavement. BMW was the first to master the art of undetectable ABS; take a ride on a S1000RR and you'll quickly understand. And there's a good reason why BMW is a leader in undetectable ABS - the Bavarian company has much experience honing its antilock braking system, considering it was the first manufacturer to offer ABS back in 1988 on its K models. And today, it's the only company to offer ABS as standard equipment across its entire motorcycle lineup." -- Ron Lieback, UltimateMotorcycling.com
