Florida Motorcyclist Rides with a Video Camera to Document Potential Accidents

This article from winknews.com concerns the safety of South Florida motorcyclists. The associated video was taken by a female rider who strapped a video camera on her helmet and went out riding. Here's an excerpt:
"Sierra Armour rode her motorcycle down Cypress Lake Drive in Fort Myers strapped with a camera. The helmet camera captured the moment a car pulled out in front of Sierra's bike. It looks like bad judgement on the driver's part, but Sierra says this little encounter happens too much, and that's why she continues to push for vehicles to be aware of motorcycles on the road." -- winknews.com

Rolling Thunder XXVI and Other Events in Washington, D.C.

My wife and I attended Rolling Thunder® in Washington, D.C. a few years ago and I wrote an article about our experiences. There is a current article about the events this weekend for Rolling Thunder® XXVI by Susan L Ruth of communities.washingtontimes.com. Here's an excerpt:

"The Rolling Thunder run, a slow motorcycle ride through blocked-off Washington D.C. streets, brings more than 250,000 riders to Washington D.C. each year to raise awareness of United States veterans and soldiers missing in action or held as prisoners of war." -- Susan L Ruth, communities.washingtontimes.com

Triumph Recalls 2012-2013 Speed Triple for Incorrect Neutral Engagement

Triumph Motorcycles (Triumph) is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Speed Triple motorcycles manufactured June 2012 through January 2013. Due to the incorrect engagement of the neutral switch and gear selector drum, the neutral light may remain illuminated despite the motorcycle actually being in gear.

The operator may think the motorcycle is in neutral while the motorcycle is in gear. This could lead to unintended movement of the motorcycle and a possible crash.

279 units are affected.

Custom Motorcycle Uses Mac Computer Parts

Some people are finding new ways to reuse Apple computer parts. An article in Huffingtonpost.com by Betsy Isaacson explains how one motorcycle customizer created a unique motorcycle. Here's an excerpt:
"The 'One Motorcycle Show' in Portland, Ore. was briefly, in February, home to some of the most gorgeous motorcycles in the world. So it shouldn't be a huge surprise that one of the entries was a bike made out of parts from the slickest computer company around." -- Betsy Isaacson, Huffingtonpost.com

2014 Honda Grom Introduced

Honda is bringing out a new model, the Grom, they include in their Sport category. It's only 125cc and intended to attract a few new riders to the sport. I have included it on my Honda Models page.

I found an article by Jerry Smith of Motorcyclistonline.com that describes the Grom. Here's an excerpt:

"Like every motorcycle manufacturer, Honda is fishing for new riders, and the 2014 Honda Grom is the company’s latest lure. Think of it as a bright, shiny spinner, like the kind you’d use to catch that big ol’ lunker that lives at the bottom of the lake. Except the big one Honda is after is Generation Y, which consists of young people who have smartphones glued to their heads and are so wrapped up in digital technology they have little inclination to get driver’s licenses, never mind buy cars or motorcycles. That’s a worrying trend for anyone in the business of building two-wheelers, one Honda hopes the Grom will reverse." -- Jerry Smith, Motorcyclistonline.com

Run for the Wall Meets Rolling Thunder

Rolling Thunder® was started in 1987 by two Vietnam vets, Artie Muller and Ray Manzo, who wanted a way to draw attention to the plight of our country's Prisoners of War/Missing in Action (POW/MIA). They decided that a gathering of motorcycle riders would have the biggest impact.

In 1988, the first Rolling Thunder® "Ride for Freedom" was held in Washington, D.C. over the Memorial Day weekend with 2500 motorcycles and 5000 marchers. The marching portion of the event was dropped after the first few events but the number of motorcycles steadily increased over the years with recent numbers around 250,000.

My Rolling Thunder article gives all the details of a Rolling Thunder ride my wife and I made a few years ago.

There are many groups of riders who head to Washington each year in conjunction with the Rolling Thunder ride. The most famous of these is the Run for the Wall. This cross-country journey starts in Rancho Cucamonga, CA and ends in Washington, D.C.

Jon Mark Beilue has a detailed article about this ride in amarillo.com. Here's an excerpt:

"Gary Burd has been riding motorcycles for 48 years. He's driven 430,000 miles since he began logging them in 1999. The senior pastor at Christian Heritage Church averages close to 35,000 miles yearly, and none mean more than the 2,700-plus miles on a special trip every May.

Burd is a senior chaplain riding a 2009 Harley-Davidson Street Glide from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., to Washington. For the ninth year, he’s among approximately 2,000 bikers to make the cross-country trip for Run for the Wall." -- Jon Mark Beilue, amarillo.com

Triumph Recalls 2012-2013 Tiger Explorer and Explorer XC for Incorrect Gross Vehicle Weight Rating on Label

Triumph Motorcycles America, Ltd. is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Explorer and Explorer XC motorcycles. The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating data on the certification Label is incorrect. Thus, the motorcycles fail to comply with the requirements of Part 567, "Certification."

The incorrect label could cause the operator to overload the motorcycle which may result in handling issues and/or tire failure, increasing the risk of a crash.

1186 units are affected.

Check out my Motorcycle Recalls feature for more details.

Green Ribbon Motorcycle Ride Held to Benefit 10 Charities in the Aftermath of the Newtown Sandy Hook Elementary School Tragedy

As reported here recently, a motorcycle run, the Green Ribbon Ride, was organized to support 10 Newtown, CT charities. Fred Musante of Valley.NewHavenIndependent.org reports on this motorcycle run held May 5, 2013 to benefit these charities in the aftermath of the tragic Newtown Sandy Hook Elementary School killings. Here's an excerpt:
"Thousands of motorcycles rumbled out of downtown Shelton Sunday morning at the start of the Green Ribbon Ride, a benefit event to remember the 20 first-grade children and six educators murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown on Dec. 14. Organizers estimated that more than 3,000 motorcycles were entered for a fee of $20 each, the proceeds benefiting 10 funds created in the wake of the tragedy to aid the families of the victims and the emergency personnel who responded to the crime scene." -- Fred Musante, Valley.NewHavenIndependent.org

As Seen on TV - Motorcycle Crashes into Bicyclists

Many have already seen the video of a red motorcycle crashing into a group of bicyclists. Here's an article from KSL.com by John Clyde that shows the complete video and discusses the accident. Here's an excerpt:
"As the weather warms up we start seeing more and more cyclists and motorcycle riders. The sunny weather lends itself to cycling, but it also ups the risk for an accident, and this video shows just how dangerous it can be. Mulholland is a famous stretch of road in the Los Angeles area, and a certain spot known as Deadman's Turn is a popular spot for cyclists. This video was recently captured of a rider on a motorcycle running into the backs of two road bikers." -- John Clyde, KSL.com
